Kaniv nature reserve

Kaniv nature reserve

Kaniv nature reserve is established in 1923 with a  territory of 2027 hectares (78 square miles) located near Kaniv town on the right bank of the Dnieper river and floodplain islands of the river. The reserve borders with Chernecha Hill, the burial place of Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko. Kaniv nature reserve was established on the foundation of Kaniv research forestry and is a structural subdivision of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

The main objectives of the reserve are: to preserve unique forest-steppe complexes, to preserve biodiversity and to observe change s in natural processes.

In 1832, nearly the century before establishing the reserve F. Dyuba and Monpere noticed the deformation of the local geological structures. That began the study of  now world-wide known Kaniv Geological Dislocations. Between 1875 and 1876 professor A. Rogovitch collected unique palaeozoological samples and noticed the enormous concentration of different geological epoch fossils  in it.

There was also another important reason to establish the reserve – to protect Chernecha Hill from erosion which happened due to withdrawal of surrounding lands from agricultural use.

Kaniv nature reserve is one of the oldest reserves in Ukraine. It was established by regulation issued by National Land Committee of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on 30th of July, 1923. In the last 88 years the territory as well as the status of the reserve were changes several times. From 1951 till 1968 the territory was the research forestry of Kyiv university. The regulation #568 dated 12th of November, 1968 issues by Council of Ministers of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic returned the status of state reserve. The regulation #717 dated 22nd of December, 1986 issued by Council of Ministers of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic expanded the reserve territory to today's 2027 hectares (78 square miles).

The reserve territory includes 1415 hectares ( 5.5 square miles) of hills and gullies on the right bank of Dnieper river, two Dnieper's floodplain islands – Krooglyk island (92 hectares or 0.35 square miles) and Shelestiv island (394 hectares or 1.5 square miles) as well as number of Zmijini islands (totaling 116 hectares or 0.44 square miles) on the remnants of left bank terrace, now in the Kaniv water reservoir. There is a 1353 hectares (5.2 square miles) preserve zone around the Kaniv nature reserve.

There is a Nature Museum in the academic Bilyashivsky memorial house belonging to Kaniv nature reserve estate. As the feedback book says – the museum is unique due to scientific value and variety of it's exhibit. The history of Kaniv nature from Mesozoic era and the history of man from Palaeolithic age to the present day is represented by a number of exhibits collected in and around the reserve.
