THE KANIV STATE MEMORIAL TO T. G. SHEVCHENKO AND RESERVE

THE KANIV STATE MEMORIAL TO T. G. SHEVCHENKO AND RESERVE

Our tour about the Shevchenko sites in the Cherkassi Region comes to an end on Taras Hill. The place where on May 22, 1861 the genius son of our nation was accepted forever into his land's bosom.

Instead of the iron cross that had been cast on the proceeds collected by the people, and erected on the grave mound in 1884, the workers of  the  Gorodische  sugar  refinery  cast the first   monument to the Kobzar according to K. Тereshcenko's design, and erected it on the grave in 1923. In 1925 the territory surrounding the grave was declared a State Reserve, and in 1929, according to V. Krichevsky's design erected was a two-storey building for the Literary Memorial Museum housing the exposition about the life, creative works and posthumous glory of T. G. Shevchenko, there is also a library and a hall for demonstrating films and holding lectures in it. In 1939 commemorating the 125th birth anniversary of the poet his grave was put into order and strengthened with a concrete ceiling above the burial vault. A restored granite tombstone with an inscription, and a grand bronze monument (the author of which was M. G. Manizer) have been erected on the concrete top layer of the grave. Nearby, on the slope, a tourist hotel «Tarasova Gora» has been built for the visitors.

During the period of temporary German occupation the hitlerites plundered the museum and turned it into a concentration camp, committed an outrage upon the monument by shooting at it. After Kaniv was liberated, the inhabitants of the town put the grave into order and restored the building of the museum. On March 22, 1944 a decision to resume work in the museum and reserve for visitors was adopted.

In the museum on display is a collection of wares of folk decorative art devoted to themes about Shevchenko. There is a wide exposition of documents and material commemorating the 100th anniversary of Shevchenko's death and his 150th birth anniversary. Taking pride in the genius of World literature and in our  people you will learn that about 10 million people from 132 countries have visited the museum-reserve on Taras's Hill since it was founded.

From all the corners of our country and from abroad people come to T. G. Shevchenko's grave in a never-ending stream.

In 1977 the architect A. Ya. Moshensky designed new stairs of granite leading up the slope of the Taras Hill, and the never-ceasing stream of hundreds of thousands of people rises up them now.
